Main Causes of Droopy Eyelid

Droopy Eyelid – Main Causes

A common cause for concern in Singapore, not only can droopy eyelids (ptosis) be dangerous if caused by a health issue, it can also damage to confidence. For this reason, many Singaporeans like to find a solution as soon as possible. As far as solutions go, one can only really be found once a cause has been identified and the causes can vary.

Whilst some experience a slight drooping, others have their whole pupil covered so let’s take a look at the main causes;

Droopy Eyelid Causes

  • Aponeurotic Ptosis – If the problem isn’t present at birth, ageing will then be the next most likely cause of ptosis. Otherwise known as senile ptosis, gravity and ageing come together to cause a stretching in the tissue that normally helps to keep the eyelid muscle up. Although this can affect both eyes, one will normally be lower than the other.
  • Congenital Ptosis – Here, the levator muscle we previously discussed is faulty at birth and so the eyelids will droop. When this occurs, it normally only affects one eye from birth and it causes a huge problem to a child’s development. Unfortunately, surgery is the only option here and it needs to be done early to prevent a permanent loss of vision.
  • Muscle Diseases – Officially called oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, this can be a huge problem that affects eye motion and can also lead to a problem with swallowing. In teens and young adults, progressive external ophthalmoplegia can lead to droopy eyelids in both eyes as well as eye movement and the symptoms that include the heart and throat muscles.
  • Myasthenia Gravis – Although this is a rare condition, ptosis is the early symptom of this health problem so it shouldn’t be ignored. At its core, the condition vastly changes how muscles can react to nerves and it leads to a weakness in the muscles. As well as having droopy eyelids, this weakness can also spread to legs, arms, and many other body parts.
  • Local Problems – Aside from these main four issues, drooping eyelids can also be caused by a simple infection, a blow to the eye, or something more serious like a tumour inside the socket of the eye itself.
