Ellansé fillers are made of a biodegradable synthetic polymer called polycaprolactone (PCL). Their main ingredient is PCL microspheres, which are suspended in a gel carrier made of another polymer called carboxymethylcellulose (CMC).
If the big scientific terms sound scary, don’t worry—the actual process of injection is generally considered safe and straightforward. As you age, your body produces less and less of two structural proteins: collagen and elastin. Your skin loses firmness and becomes loose, causing sagging and drooping. The fillers are injected into your skin to restore volume that is lost as a result of this.
Ellansé fillers work using a simple two-step process. First, upon injection, volume-deficient areas in your skin are immediately filled up with the CMC gel carrier. Next, the PCL microspheres simultaneously stimulate the process of neocollagenesis, causing your body to produce more collagen.
Over time, as the CMC gel carrier is naturally reabsorbed by your body, new collagen replaces it and retains the PCL microspheres, leading to longer-lasting volume. From then on, you may enjoy a natural lifting and tightening effect on your skin as a result of the collagen produced.

Traditional dermal fillers like Sculptra directly target signs of aging by smoothening wrinkles and filling in volume-deficient areas. In comparison, Ellansé fillers may go a step further: in addition to their immediate anti-aging effects, they target the root cause of wrinkles and saggy skin by stimulating collagen production. This helps to slow (or even reverse) the signs of aging in the long term.
Because Ellansé fillers encourage the production of new collagen, they often last much longer than traditional dermal fillers: anywhere from 1–4 years in comparison to just 6–18 months for the latter. The longevity of Ellansé fillers depends on the type of Ellansé fillers used (S, M, L or E) and the number of molecules that make up the PCL microspheres.
Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Ellansé fillers do not contain hyaluronic acid (HA). HA fillers work to produce a skin-lifting effect due to their gel properties, whereas Ellansé fillers work by stimulating collagen production.
The best results are usually enjoyed by those with facial scars, sunken cheeks or deep nasolabial folds (around the nose and mouth areas). After treatment, these features can be filled in or erased. As Ellansé fillers are longer-lasting than most traditional dermal fillers, they are also popular among patients who wish to shape or sculpt their nose for greater definition.
Injection of Ellansé fillers usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the areas that require treatment. Topical anaesthesia is available to ensure that the procedure is as comfortable and painless as possible.
Ellansé fillers are generally considered safe as the dermal fillers undergo total reabsorption by the body after the longevity period has passed. Any side effects are usually associated with the act of injection, such as mild bruising or soreness. However, these are usually temporary and easily resolved.
